9 - The Emerald City -- Shanghai

Bob said, let's go to Shanghai. Shanghai, arriving at the modern Pudong Airport 30 km. from the city center, the third busiest airport in the world for freight, carrying 28+ million passengers in 2008. Here is our hotel at left, the Grand Hyatt (above the 54th floor of the Jinmao Building) and the World Financial Center next door.

The World Financial Center by night.

Buildings along the Huangpu River from the street...

Inside the Grand Hyatt.

From the 71st floor by night...

By day, with the Huangpu River busy with boat and barge traffic...

The World Financial Center by day from the 71st floor.

We took a taxi from the hotel and via the Fuxing Road tunnel we cross to the west side of the river to the Shanghai Old Street market area.

We wandered up and down and back and forth in the narrow streets of the mercantile center with its many small businerss shops of all kinds and upper story production factories. Whole lot of business going on.

A ceiling in the bazaar.

Shanghai Old Street. Shanghai's population is 16.7 million (2000 census).

Some of Shanghai's earliest banking houses, gold and silverware shops, teahouses, theaters, and trading companies are along Shanghai Old Street (formerly Fangbang Road).

Coming to Yuyuan Gardens.

The City God's Temple. The faithful light sticks of incense from a large brazier in the courtyard, but are warned by signs not to take them into the shrines in the wooden structure that border the courtyard.
